Trwa II wojna światowa.René Artois jest właścicielem kawiarni we Francji w miasteczku Nouvion. Mieszka tam ze swoją żoną Edith oraz teściową, która nienawidzi Niemców. Tak się składa, że Rene jest działaczem Ruchu Oporu i stara się jak najbardziej potajemnie pokrzyżować plany tutejszemu generałowi von Klinkerhoffenowi i jego podwładnym. Pomagają mu w tym Michelle z ruchu oporu, oficer Crabtree i wiele osób z miasteczka. W Cafe Rene chętnie bywają także niemieccy żołnierze: pułkownik von Strohm i porucznik Gruber, który podkochuje się we właścicielu kawiarni. Biedny Rene musi wykonywać wszystkie ich polecenia. Przechowuje m. in. obraz Upadłej Madonny z wielkim cycem van Klompa, który zamierzają sprzedać po wojnie. Na obraz ma jednak chrapkę wiele osób a w szczególności Herr Flick z gestapo - chrześniak samego Heinricha Himmlera . W tym całym zamieszaniu Rene ma jeszcze czas na romansowanie z kelnerkami Yvette i Mimi.
