QINGYUAN, GUANGDONG PROVINCE, Dec. 15 (Xinhua) -- Despite a win and six top-10 finishes on the US LPGA Tour this year, World No. 25 Kim Hyo-joo said Thursday that she was looking to salvage what she called "a disappointing season" by capturing her third Hyundai China Ladies Open title when the national championship tees off tomorrow in Guangdong province.
"I came to win this tournament. I have had two wins here and my goal is the third. I believe my hunger for a victory is stronger than any other player now after such a season. It should be an auspicious omen for next year if I held the trophy on Sunday," said the South Korean at Lion Lake Country Club, located in Qingyuan, a northern city of Guangzhou.
The 550,000 U.S. dollars China LPGA Tour season-ending tournament is a co-sanctioned event with the LPGA Tour of South Korea.
The 21-year-old Kim, a winner of 14 international tournaments since turning pro four years ago, won the Hyundai China Ladies Open in 2012 and 2014. Last year she was runner-up at the championship in Hainan province, two strokes behind compatriot Park Sung-hyun at Mission Hills Haikou. Her first US LPGA Tour victory was a major at the 2014 Evian Championship in France.
"This year I had some good finishes on the US LPGA Tour, but bad finishes were more than good ones. So I should say it is a disappointing season," said the Wonju native who in January won the US LPGA Tour season opener, the Pure Silk Bahamas LPGA Classic.
"The season was long. We were busy from one tournament to another. I had not much time to get some good coaching between tournaments. Some little mistakes kept on accumulating and at the end of year I just had a big issue -- my accuracy dropped."
As a frequent visitor to China over the years with four wins in the country, including Kumho Tire Ladies Open titles in 2014 and 2015, Kim said she was eager to improve on the equal 12th performance she registered the last time the Hyundai China Ladies Open was played at Lion Lake in 2013.
"I played three years ago and didn' t have a good finish. It might be one of the worst finishes in the Chinese events I played. But I am familiar with this golf course now. I believe that I have a great chance. I have been to China many times since I was an amateur. I know some Chinese players and feel familiar," she said.
Looking to break the South Korean domination of the national championship that has now stretched to 10 years is Feng Simin. After taking three weeks off for a back injury, the US LPGA Tour regular said she was feeling okay now and was looking forward to the week.
"The China Open has become one of my favorite tournaments because it is the last event of the year and chance to get together and play with my friends. I am also playing against the best players in China and South Korea, so definitely a good gathering for both countries. For myself, being a part of the China Open, I feel I have a duty and a responsibility to be here," said the Beijing native.
After a disappointing rookie season stateside in 2015, the 21-year-old posted a wire-to-wire victory at the LPGA qualifying school last December to regain her playing card and a posted solid campaign this year. On the strength of three top-20 finishes, Feng, the first amateur to win a China LPGA Tour event at the Wuhan Orient Masters Challenge in 2012, earned US$182,169 to finish 79th on the money list and retain her playing card.
The third-year pro, currently ranked 239th in the world, said this week would come down to putting.
"I was checking the weather for the next couple of days. It seemed to be pretty windy and the temperature will be dropping just a bit, so I think patience is number one on this golf course. The course is in great shape right now, the greens may be on the tougher side so patience on the greens will definitely come into play."
Lion Lake Country Club is a 27-hole layout designed by Rick Jacobson. The 11th Hyundai China Ladies Open, December 16-18, is being contested over the par-72, 6,333-yard Moon layout.
