PHNOM PENH, Oct. 22 (Xinhua) -- About 53 percent of all children in Cambodia experienced at least one incident of physical violence prior to the age of 18 by an intimate partner, parent, adult relative, or community member, said the findings of the Violence Against Children Survey 2013 on Wednesday. "Many of Cambodian children experience physical violence in particular, but also emotional violence and sexual abuse,"the survey results said, adding that physical violence was the most commonly reported type of violence experienced by respondents aged 18 to 24.
Emotional violence in childhood was reported by one in five females and one in four males, the results said, adding that nearly 5 percent of males and females in childhood suffered at least one experience of childhood sexual abuse before the age of 18.
The findings estimated that the minimum economic loss of health consequences of violence against children in Cambodia totalled 161 million U.S. dollars in 2013, accounting for 1.06 percent of the country's GDP.
It is estimated that the Southeast Asian nation has 5.48 million children aged below 18, representing 41 percent of the country's population.
The survey was conducted by the Ministry of Women's Affairs in partnership with UNICEF and the United States Centres for Disease Control and Prevention. A total of 2,560 children and young people were interviewed in the survey. "The survey results provide, for the first time, national estimates that describe the magnitude and nature of sexual, physical and emotional violence experienced by girls and young women and boys and young men in childhood,"Ing Kantha Phavi, minister of Women's Affairs, said during the launch of the survey findings. "The report highlights the particular vulnerabilities of boys and girls to sexual violence and the negative health consequences of these experiences on their childhoods and beyond,"she said.
The survey was designed to help support efforts in Cambodia to develop and implement effective child-friendly prevention strategies as well as to improve service provision for all Cambodians, especially children, who experience violence.
Marta Santos Pais, special representative of the UN Secretary- General on Violence against Children, said the results brought to light the hidden reality of violence against children and it laid the foundation for an evidence-based policy agenda. "I wish to encourage the government to integrate the findings from the research into its overall policy agenda,"she said."The elimination of all forms of violence against children must be a core indicator of national social improvement."
